Transportation

Transportation support is steady, door-through-door help getting where your loved one needs to be — medical appointments, errands, social visits — from the front door, into the building, and safely home again.

Is this the right kind of help?

You might recognize some of these:

  • They’ve stopped driving, or shouldn’t be, and appointments are being missed
  • Getting in and out of a car safely now needs another pair of hands
  • Public transport or ride-share apps aren’t realistic for them
  • You’re taking time off work to drive them to every appointment
  • They’d get out more if getting there wasn’t such an ordeal

If a few of those ring true, a conversation with a care coordinator is a good next step — there’s no obligation.

What’s included

  • Steady help from the front door to the vehicle, and safely in and out — including with a walker or wheelchair
  • Routes planned to arrive with time to spare, not rushed
  • Walking them into the building and helping with check-in
  • Waiting through the appointment and passing on instructions to the family
  • A pharmacy or grocery stop on the way home if needed
  • Seeing them back inside, settled and comfortable, before the visit ends

The exact tasks are set in a written care plan you approve, and adjusted as needs change.

How Selectives delivers it

This isn’t a taxi. A ride-share drops someone at the curb; our caregivers are with your loved one from their armchair to the exam room and back, carrying the bag, remembering the questions, holding the arm on the icy path.

If a new prescription or instruction comes out of the appointment, the caregiver can collect the medication on the way home and make sure the family knows what changed.

Who it’s for

Transportation support suits older adults who no longer drive, people who need physical help getting in and out of a car, and anyone whose social life or healthcare is shrinking because getting there is too hard alone.

Typical schedules

  • Booked per appointment, as needed
  • A standing weekly outing for errands and a coffee
  • Part of a regular companion-care visit

Care agreements run for a minimum of three months, with two weeks’ notice required to cancel the agreement. Visits have a five-hour minimum and no weekly minimum. Please give 24 hours’ notice to change or cancel a visit; there is no late cancellation fee.

What it costs and how to pay

Pricing is provided after a nurse evaluates your needs. Visits have a five-hour minimum, with no minimum weekly hours. There is currently no additional rate for evening, overnight or live-in care.

Invoices are issued weekly or every two weeks, as agreed. We accept checks and bank transfers. No deposit or card on file is required.

Private pay is our primary focus, and we also work with long-term care insurance and Veterans benefits. Selectives also participates as a Maryland Medicaid provider under the Community Options Program; Medicaid services are subject to eligibility, authorization, program requirements, service availability and other applicable requirements. Contact our care team to discuss your needs and available options.

Transportation: common questions

Whose car is used?

We normally use the client’s vehicle. If a caregiver’s vehicle is used, mileage is charged. Contact us to agree the mileage rate before travel.

Can the caregiver come into the appointment?

Yes, if your loved one wants that. Caregivers can help at check-in, sit in the waiting room or the appointment, take notes, and relay what the doctor said to the family afterwards.

Is wheelchair transport available?

We do not have wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Tell us about mobility needs before booking so we can discuss whether our transportation service is suitable.

How far will you travel?

Within our service area and to appointments a reasonable distance beyond it. Longer trips can usually be arranged with notice; ask the coordinator.
