Developmental disabilities support

This is consistent, encouraging in-home support for adults with developmental disabilities — help with daily living that builds skills and confidence, keeps a steady routine, and supports a connected life in the community.

Is this the right kind of help?

You might recognize some of these:

  • A family caregiver is stretched and needs reliable, regular support
  • Daily routines are inconsistent and that’s causing anxiety or setbacks
  • There’s a goal — more independence, a activity, a job — that needs someone alongside to reach it
  • A transition is coming — a change at home, a new program, ageing parents
  • The current arrangement doesn’t leave room for community life and interests

If a few of those ring true, a conversation with a care coordinator is a good next step — there’s no obligation.

What’s included

  • Support with daily living — personal care, meals, home routines — done with the person, building skills
  • A consistent daily and weekly structure, using visual schedules or other tools where they help
  • Support to take part in activities, hobbies, classes and community events
  • Calm, respectful help managing anxiety, with attention to sensory needs
  • A safe, adapted home environment that reduces overwhelm without over-restricting
  • Working alongside families, support coordinators and any behavioral or therapy plans in place

The exact tasks are set in a written care plan you approve, and adjusted as needs change.

How Selectives delivers it

The starting point is the person’s own goals, not a checklist. We plan support around what they want to be able to do — and build towards it in small, achievable steps, with lots of encouragement.

Consistency and predictability matter here, so we keep a small regular team and follow the routines and communication approaches that already work, rather than introducing our own.

Who it’s for

This support is for adults living with autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability and other developmental disabilities, at home with family or living more independently, and for the families and coordinators supporting them.

Typical schedules

  • Regular weekday support while family caregivers work
  • Evenings and weekends for community activities and respite
  • A flexible mix that fits around a day program or job

Care agreements run for a minimum of three months, with two weeks’ notice required to cancel the agreement. Visits have a five-hour minimum and no weekly minimum. Please give 24 hours’ notice to change or cancel a visit; there is no late cancellation fee.

What it costs and how to pay

Pricing is provided after a nurse evaluates your needs. Visits have a five-hour minimum, with no minimum weekly hours. There is currently no additional rate for evening, overnight or live-in care.

Invoices are issued weekly or every two weeks, as agreed. We accept checks and bank transfers. No deposit or card on file is required.

Private pay is our primary focus, and we also work with long-term care insurance and Veterans benefits. Selectives also participates as a Maryland Medicaid provider under the Community Options Program; Medicaid services are subject to eligibility, authorization, program requirements, service availability and other applicable requirements. Contact our care team to discuss your needs and available options.

Developmental disabilities support: common questions

Is this a medical or behavioral service?

No. Selectives provides non-medical support — help with daily living, routine, activities and community access. We work alongside any behavioral, therapy or clinical plans that are in place, but we don’t deliver clinical or behavioral treatment ourselves.

Can support be funded through a Maryland waiver?

Some participants receive services through Maryland developmental-disabilities or Medicaid waiver programs. Whether Selectives can bill a particular program depends on enrolment; a coordinator will tell you what’s possible.

How do you match a caregiver for this support?

We match on temperament, communication style, shared interests and any specific needs, and keep the team small and consistent. You meet the caregiver before support starts, and we’ll change the match if it isn’t working.

Will you follow the plans we already have?

Yes. We follow the routines, visual supports, communication methods and goals that already work for the person, and coordinate with the family and support coordinator so everyone is consistent.
