About

Our caregivers

The person who comes into your home is the whole point. This is how we decide who that is — the screening, training and matching steps we use.

How we find caregivers

Good caregiving is a mix of temperament and skill, and the temperament part can’t be taught. We recruit for people who are genuinely patient, reliable and kind — the sort of person you’d want sitting with your own mother — and then we train and support them properly so they stay.

Previous caregiving experience is preferred. We review CNA, GNA, CPR and First Aid certifications when matching applicants to roles.

How we screen them

Before assignment, caregivers complete criminal background and fingerprint checks, employment/reference checks, TB/health screening, an in-person interview, a skills assessment and a driving-record check. Annual repeat background checks are planned.

Training

Caregivers complete four hours of orientation and receive ongoing training every six months. Those supporting people with dementia receive additional dementia-specific training.

  • Safe transfers, mobility assistance and fall prevention
  • Personal care and hygiene done with dignity
  • Recognizing and reporting a change in a client’s condition
  • Infection control and hand hygiene
  • Emergency procedures and when to call 911 or the office
  • Client rights, privacy and confidentiality
  • Dementia-specific communication and behavior support for caregivers working with memory-care clients

How we match a caregiver to your family

After the free in-home consultation, the care coordinator writes a plan and then matches a caregiver to it — not just on availability, but on the things that make a relationship work: shared language, a compatible temperament, experience with the specific condition, comfort with pets, whether your loved one prefers someone quiet or someone chatty.

Where we can, we introduce the caregiver before their first working visit, and we keep the team small so your loved one sees familiar faces rather than a rota of strangers.

If the match isn’t right

Tell us. You will not have to justify it or have an awkward conversation with the caregiver — the coordinator handles it, and we assign someone else. Getting the match right matters more to us than getting it right the first time.

Supervision and quality checks

Your coordinator reviews the care plan as needs change. Call us whenever you have a concern or would like a home visit; we will agree the follow-up arrangements with you.

Call 443-847-4057 at any time: the owner answers the same number 24/7 for new inquiries and urgent care concerns, including a caregiver not arriving. In a medical emergency, call 911 first.

Languages

Our caregiving team speaks English and Spanish. Tell us your preferred language so we can discuss a suitable match.

Questions families ask about our caregivers

Are Selectives caregivers background-checked?

Yes. Before their first assignment, each caregiver goes through criminal background and fingerprint checks, reference checks, TB/health screening, an interview, a skills assessment and a driving-record check. Repeating the background check every year is planned.

Are they employees or contractors?

Caregivers currently work with Selectives as independent contractors. Selectives coordinates their screening, training, care plans and scheduling.

Will the same caregiver come every time?

We aim for consistency and keep your team small, so your loved one sees familiar people. When your regular caregiver is on leave or unwell, a caregiver who has been briefed on the care plan covers, and we tell you in advance whenever we can.

What if we don’t click with the caregiver?

Tell the care coordinator and we’ll assign someone else. You don’t need to explain yourself or raise it with the caregiver directly. A good personal fit is central to how this works, and we’d rather change it than have anyone put up with a match that isn’t right.

Are caregivers insured and bonded?

Selectives maintains professional liability insurance and carries workers’ compensation insurance. Caregiver bonding is planned but not yet in place.
